Your Thoughts Are Not The Problem

You’ve tried and tried to “think positive” and it hasn’t worked. You’re exhausted and wondering what to do now. Aren’t you tired of trying so hard? What if you could uncover the actual problem? Often, we think our thoughts are the problem but that’s not true. Your thoughts are a symptom of the problem.

The real problem is your perception of yourself. When you can’t see yourself clearly, the rest of the world is muddy, too.

Why Perception Matters

David went for his annual eye exam. He’d always suffered with poor eyesight so he wasn’t surprised when he needed a prescription to get a stronger pair of lenses in his glasses.

The day he started wearing these new glasses, David thought something was weird. He dismissed it with the idea that his eyes just needed to get use to the new lens. But David had many problems after that. He bumped into walls easily and misjudged the distance when throwing a ball.

He kept telling himself to “think positive” and keep moving forward. However, when he dented his bumper due to his faulty lenses, he finally went back to the eye doctor.

His doctor checked David’s new glasses and pointed out that the tech who ordered them had misread the original prescription. The lenses weren’t right and that was causing the problems David was experiencing.

Like David, your beliefs are just like lenses, and they can be wrong. When that happens, you don’t see things clearly. You make assumptions and judgements about yourself or your life that aren’t true at all!

It’s Time for a New Look

Sometimes, our brains make up stories to protect us. You make excuses or offer reasons why your life isn’t what you want it to be. You might say things like:

  • “Well, my mom was an alcoholic. That’s why my life is so terrible.”
  • “My husband is a jerk who won’t help me with the kids. That’s why I can’t start my business.”
  • “My boss isn’t supportive of my ideas. That’s why I can’t get ahead in my career.”

These stories might sound good. There may even be some grain of truth to them. But the real issue lies with how you’re thinking about yourself.

What If You’re Already What You Want to Be?

I was working with a coaching client who shared an exciting accomplishment. She said, “After learning from you and taking action, I feel strong and capable.”

When I heard her words, I responded, “Well, of course. You’re strong. You always have been.”

There’s a quote by Denis Waitley that’s an excellent example of this concept. He said, “It’s not what you are that holds you back. It’s what you think you are not.”

Getting Down to the True Problem

Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up thinking that you must do more in order to become “something”. You might tell yourself, “I’m almost there. If I just push a little harder then I will finally be worthy.”

But what if that’s not true at all? What if that’s a flawed way of thinking? Here is what I know – That which you want so very much to be – what you don’t see – is that you are. The desire that we have to be positive and feel good about ourselves is there because we are.

Don’t Put on Overalls Just Yet!

As soon as the idea is presented that you’re enough just as you are, you might immediately think it’s all handled.  This is your brain trying to protect you again. Unfortunately, soon you will be repeating the same patterns.

You must get to the real issues going on because your brain might even say, “Change is too painful. It’s too hard and takes too long.”

Imagine that the hard work is actually when you are trying to maintain where you are right now.
