Don’t Miss the Big Stuff

After all of these years, I still marvel at the “big stuff” that pops into my life whenever I am experiencing the journey of the “little stuff.” You never know where you are headed, regardless of how clear you think your path may be.

A few years ago, I made a decision to attend a conference that changed my entire family forever. One tiny choice led to a huge gain in relationships. During the summer of 2007, I chose to attend the eWomenNetwork Conference in Dallas for the purpose of networking and building new business alliances. I certainly accomplished my goal. However, the growth of my business was merely little stuff compared to the BIG stuff that was to come.

Today, our family has countless things to be grateful for, but I want to share with you one of the most important BIG things that happened to us. As many of you know, we have new additions to our family through our oldest son Michael, his marriage to Brian, and the adoption of their three beautiful children this past year.

My point in this blog is to share with you their lives as part of the community of Deaf. Furthermore, I want to express the extraordinary bilingual richness that ASL has brought to our all-hearing, English-speaking family.

Embracing all different kinds of culture, and being open to diversity brings about much of the BIG stuff you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to encounter otherwise. You never know when or where you will find this BIG STUFF in your life. I can’t imagine what our lives would be like without the extension of our family through the Deaf Community.

We call our family “Deaf by Choice,” because each of the Deaf members of our family were hand-picked out of love.

Brian Berry-Berlinski, our son-in-law, wrote this incredibly educational and inspiring article in a magazine called “THRIVE,” produced by California School for the Deaf. I share it with you!
